Ready to Explore? Preparing for a New Zealand Summer Road Trip13 Dec 2023

As the Kiwi summer unfolds in New Zealand, beckoning us to hit the road and explore its breathtaking locations, it's essential to blend the thrill of the open road with a commitment to road safety and preparedness.
From the enchanting Bay of Islands to the geothermal wonders of Hot Water Beach, the coastal charm of our beach towns, the wine lovers' paradise in Napier, and the tranquil beauty of Abel Tasman, there's an abundance of summer delights to explore. Let's not overlook New Zealand’s impressive waterfall bucket list, boasting over 250 accessible waterfalls scattered across our diverse landscape. Our country offers an array of summer delights attracting both kiwi and international travellers, especially during the sun-soaked months.

As it's been a while since we've experienced those super-hot days, it's essential to consider a few factors to ensure road safety over the next few months.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. Stay Hydrated – Rather than hitting the coffee or soda on a long trip keep more hydrating alternatives handy such as celery or cucumber sticks. Many fruits and vegetables can improve your hydration status reducing brain fog and fatigue. Always have a second bottle of water handy, you never know when you might need it. Staying hydrated ensures you remain alert and focused throughout your trip.

2. Protection against sun glare – There are many ways to minimise the impact the sun has on your driving experience. Always keep a spare pair on sunglasses in your car to reduce glare and improve visibility. Regularly check your wiper blades to ensure they're in optimal condition and keep your windscreen clean and free of imperfections.  Don't forget the sun visor – use it to shield your eyes from direct sunlight and improve driving comfort. These easy steps can make a significant difference to your driving experience this summer.

3. Vehicle Maintenance – Prioritise your journeys safety. Servicing your car yearly is advised, however, before any long drive personally carry out these routine checks to ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition.
- Tyre Inspection: Check your tread depth and ensure each tyre is at the correct inflation level (including your spare). Regular checks will ensure the longevity of your tyres and contribute to a safer and more fuel-efficient journey.
- Fluid levels: Ensure that your oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid are at the recommended levels.
- Light Inspection: A thorough inspection of your head lights, brake lights and turning signals enhances visibility and ensures your vehicle communicates effectively with other road users, promoting a safer driving experience.

4. Emergency Car Kit - Prepare for the unexpected by regularly checking and updating your emergency car kit to ensure that all items are in good condition and meet your needs. Include essentials like a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, and basic tools. Having these items on hand can be invaluable in case of a breakdown or emergency situation.

5. Plan Ahead - As you embark on summer adventures, strategic planning can make a world of difference. With increased traffic during the season, whether on a lengthy road trip or a short commute, plan your route in advance to navigate potential traffic and construction zones. Consider adjusting your departure time to avoid peak congestion for a smoother journey. Pack essentials like hand sanitizers, wet wipes, a plastic bag for rubbish, and a towel—these prove invaluable in sticky situations, especially during in-car snacking. In case of a breakdown or an unforeseen detour, be equipped with a car charger or power bank to avoid the misfortune of a dead battery. This small yet vital item can keep your devices charged, allowing you to make emergency calls, access navigation, or seek assistance when needed. Being prepared will keep you cool and calm in any situation that arises.

A little preparation goes a long way, now once you’re on the road remember to be patient; arriving late is always preferable to an accident. Your holiday begins the second you pull out of your driveway, so enjoy it to the fullest! Drive cautiously and adapt to the conditions—considering weather, road state, light, and traffic. Remember that speed limits are set for ideal conditions, so increase following distance and reduce speed in less-than-ideal situations. Stay vigilant by checking mirrors and observing the road ahead for surprises like bad driving, cyclists, horse riders, or wandering sheep. Take regular breaks to stay alert, especially if drowsy. Address distractions, like kids, by pulling over and handling issues off the road. Don’t try to sort them out while you’re driving.

Now let’s make the most of our beautiful country during these summer months. Stay safe on the roads and create lasting memories!
