Stopped at a traffic signal or stuck in slow-moving traffic?
Sometimes we cannot avoid keeping our engine running.
But at other times idling is unnecessary.
Contrary to popular belief, restarting your car does not burn more fuel than leaving it idling. Fuel consumption will always depend on the vehicle you own but “idling can use up to 2 litres of fuel per hour, emitting over 5.26kg of CO2”.
“The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution is responsible for 4.2 million deaths each year. Particulate matter (PM) is made up of solid and liquid particles in the air, both from natural and man-made sources. When PM is inhaled, it can cause health problems. In New Zealand, these health problems associated with PM range from respiratory irritation, heart problems, lung cancer, and even premature death.”

Today’s technology is constantly taking steps to minimise our impact on the environment, but it can benefit us too. Modern cars can now fully lubricate the engine within 20-30 seconds, so by the time you get in, start the car, put on your seat belt, and get comfortable, the engine might not be fully warm. But it’s completely lubricated, and ready to get you to your destination. Make sure you Ease into your drive until your car reaches its ideal operating temperature, this is when the engine is also at its most efficient. “Running an engine when it’s cold causes increased emissions and engine wear, so driving loads the engine and warms it more than extended idling.”

So, its time to break the habit.
Let’s cut down on our fuel costs and emissions today and remember to turn off the car while we are:
• waiting to pick up kids after school
• waiting to meet someone
• having a quick snack in the car
• taking a phone call at the side of the road
and encourage others to do the same.
